FAQ

Where do I source material from?

It varies depending on the project, but mainly I get my material from thrift shops (bedding/tablecloths are such a resourceful and unique go-to), The Fabric Store, Wild Craft Co, Spoonflower, Digital Fabrics and Drapers Fabrics.

Then if I can’t find what I want from these places I’ll just do a bit of digging around online either through etsy, marketplace or just looking up local sources. I also love dropping into random boutique fabric stores as I’m travelling around to see what they have on offer!

With each of these options I aim to stick with natural fibres or responsibly sourced any alternatives (eg. deadstock, pre-loved, recycled, etc).

What sewing machine do I have and what would I recommend?

I have a Janome JR1012 and have been using it since 2009. She’s such a reliable machine and would highly recommend it if you’re looking for something easy to use and capable to help get you through pretty much any DIY sewing project.

Because I’ve had this machine for over 10 years I have no idea what models are currently available or what is the best in the market, but I do know that if you stick to brands like Janome, Brother and Singer and then find one that fits within your budget then it’s pretty hard to go wrong (bonus points if it’s second hand!).

Where/when/how did I learn to sew? Did I study fashion?

I learnt how to sew back in high school (circa ‘08) and have been hooked ever since! I chose to continue with this as one of my elective subjects all throughout school and hiiiighly considered the idea of furthering my studies with a degree in fashion but ended up being more drawn to graphic design as a career and kept sewing as my side hobby. So a lot of the knowledge I have (especially around self drafting) is self taught and I believe that’s why I can make the tutorials super straight forward and relatable!

Does making your own clothes help save money in the long run?

1000000% YES! Of course a single garment can end up taking a bit of time to make. But when you calculate the cost of items you need to make a garment vs buying from a consciously made brand it’s pretty much always guaranteed to save you tonnes of money in comparison to paying full retail prices.

I recently just made a dress from a sheet I got for free. So the dress only cost me what little thread I used. AKA next to nothing!

I can also honestly vouch that since I’ve started making/upcycling/thrifting my own clothes I’ve been able to boost my savings account so much!

But I also think making your own clothes can help you calculate the time and love that goes into making garments. It’s ultimately helped me better justify paying ‘higher’ prices for well made (sustainable and ethical produced) pieces.

What’s your recommended sewing project for a beginning?

My top three picks would be:

DIY Cami top - Such a straight forward and cute number.

DIY Bucket Hat - There are some stages that might be a bit technical but it comes with a pattern so doesn’t involve an pre-calculating if you just want to get stuck into sewing.

DIY Gathered Shorts - Another easy intro piece to make and an essential in any wardrobe.

Do you offer introduction sewing classes?

Unfortunately this is not something I currently offer. I do run group workshops every now and then. But between running my other business and working on TEC it’s a bit hard to find time to squeeze in one on one lessons.

In the hopes to not spread myself to thin and lead to burnout, I try put out content that can help you on your journey through my various channels.

I do have a Sewing 101 Video Here incase that helps in the meantime!

If you’re looking for intro sewing courses/classes I’d recommend reaching out to your local fabric shop and seeing if they run any or know of anywhere that does! For fellow Australians I’m pretty positive Spotlight offers this.
